Welcome to the 2021 Annual Review of the Department of Human Genetics – Amsterdam UMC.
2021 was a year with many developments both outside and within the department. As of July 1, 2021, the name of the Department of Clinical Genetics was changed to Human Genetics. This name covers all our disciplines, and is overarching and distinctive.

In 2021, the Covid-19 crisis has had a major effect. In addition to challenges for employees and patients, this crisis has also led to creativity and strengthening of the collaboration of the sections within the department. Further digitization of patient care and a more accessible exchange of knowledge between the various disciplines was achieved.

Despite the challenges, more than 8,000 counseling sessions for new patients took place, the lab provided the diagnostics for these and other patients, and good results have also been obtained in the field of research. For example, 10 PhD trajectories were successfully completed, a large number of wonderful publications were produced, we were able to start a number of new talents, and researchers from the department obtained various grants for innovative projects. In addition, the department has once again made a significant contribution to education within the hospital.

I would like to sincerely thank all employees and colleagues for their commitment to patient care, diagnostics, research, and education. Together, we advance the field of genetics and patient care. A department and a name to be proud of.
